Best Digital Camera

Best Digital Camera

The Best Digital Camera to be had is about so much more than just what that camera costs, and can actually be different cameras for different people.

Before the advent of Digital Cameras there were 5 note worthy Japanese 35 mm SLR camera manufacturers:Canon,Minolta,Nikon,Olympus &Pentax, and from Germany there was Leica.  However with the advent of digital photography the camera landscape has been forever altered and primarily Nikon &Canon are left as serious players.

Now this is not to say that the other camera manufacturers don’t make good cameras, but simply that Nikon &Canon make the Best Digital SLR Cameras available today.

In 1975 Kodak engineer Steve Sasson invented the digital camera. The camera had a 100 x 100 pixel (0.01 mega pixel) CCD (Charge Coupled Device) sensor, and in 1978 Sasson and his supervisor,Gareth A. Lloyd received US patent # 4131919 for their invention.

Fast forward to 1991 and Kodak releases the DCS digital camera, ranging from $20,000 to $25,000.  These cameras were available as a Kodak digital storage unit attached to either a Canon or a Nikon body.  Then in 1999 Nikon released its first digital SLR,the 2.74 megapixel Nikon D1,for $5,000 and for the first time digital photography became a viable alternative to film.

In 2000 Canon released its first digital SLR,the D30. This was a 3MP camera offering the same image quality as the Nikon D1,but in a plastic body selling for $3000,and from this time the race for digital supremacy between Nikon and Canon has never abated and they have left all other 35 mm digital camera manufacturers somewhere back in the distance.

Truth be told Nikon and Canon produce cameras of comparable quality, and while from time to time they will leap frog each other, neither one holds the lead for very long. In the end what keeps photographers loyal to one brand or the other is the massive investment they already have in lenses, flashes and other similar brand specific accessories, which often times cost well in excess of the price of their camera bodies.

As of this writing Nikon has the edge on Canon, with the Best Digital Camera Price going to the Nikon D90.

Nikon D90

Nikon’s D90,which is based on Nikon’s extremely popular D80,is the first digital camera to shoot video, and in HD to top it off.  This camera is not only better than, say, the Nikon D300,but at nearly half its price as of this writing buying it is a real no-brainer.

Canon Rebel XSi

And for those who favor Canon, there is the Canon Rebel XSi,which is the upgrade to the wildly popular Canon Rebel XTi.  In this camera Canon too has a winner that features performance to rival its higher priced siblings.
